Time & Money Saving Tips
- Buy fruit and vegetables in season or grow them in your garden. Then freeze them in air tight containers or Zip-lock bags to keep available all year long.
- I recommend planting leafy greens every 3-4 weeks in your garden from May-July....this way you will always of fresh young tasty leaves to pick all summer long...and if you have too much, simply freeze kale, swiss chard and spinach in Zip-lock bags to have available during the winter months.
- Leafy greens like kale, swiss chard and spinach can tolerate colder temperatures in the north, so you keep them in your garden until the first or second frost!
- All fruits freeze well...and you can reduce food waste by freezing your bananas before they get too brown and slicing avocado and freezing before they get too soft!
- It is often lower cost and more convenient to purchase pre-diced, frozen fruit (best way to buy berries and avocado) rather than fresh, and since they are picked when they are ripe, they retain all their nutrients once flash frozen.
